HAMILTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

About Us

The Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) is an all-volunteer department that is located in a rural section of central New York State. We are a municipal department organized within the Village of Hamilton, NY, which is located about 35 miles Southeast of the city of Syracuse. The population of the Village is 3452 (2000 census), and encompasses approximately 4.2 square miles. The Village of Hamilton is also the home of Colgate University.

The HFD provides fire suppression and rescue services as well as first response EMS services in the Village of Hamilton. Under contract, the HFD also provides these services in a fire protection district made up of certain portions of the Towns of Hamilton, Madison, and Lebanon in Madison County. The fire protection district boundary lines cross partial townships and thus the size and population of the total primary / first response area is estimated at 27 square miles and 5800 permanent residents. In addition, the HFD provides fire and rescue services to areas in the Towns of Hamilton and Lebanon located in other fire protection districts under automatic mutual aid agreements with those departments. The HFD also provides Rapid Intervention Team services to several surrounding departments in Madison, Chenango, and Oneida Counties.

The Hamilton Fire Department is made up of 52 active firefighters, of which about 25% are college students at Colgate University.

The Hamilton Fire Department holds a ISO Class 4 Rating
