About Us
The Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) is an all-volunteer department
that is located in a rural section of central New York State. We
are a municipal department organized within the Village of Hamilton,
NY, which is located about 35 miles Southeast of the city of Syracuse.
The population of the Village is 3452 (2000 census), and encompasses
approximately 4.2 square miles. The Village of Hamilton is also
the home of Colgate University.
The HFD provides fire suppression and rescue services as
well as first response EMS services in the Village of Hamilton.
Under contract, the HFD also provides these services in a fire protection
district made up of certain portions of the Towns of Hamilton, Madison,
and Lebanon in Madison County. The fire protection district boundary
lines cross partial townships and thus the size and population of
the total primary / first response area is estimated at 27 square
miles and 5800 permanent residents. In addition, the HFD provides
fire and rescue services to areas in the Towns of Hamilton and Lebanon
located in other fire protection districts under automatic mutual
aid agreements with those departments. The HFD also provides Rapid
Intervention Team services to several surrounding departments in
Madison, Chenango, and Oneida Counties.
The Hamilton Fire Department is made
up of 52 active firefighters, of which about 25% are college students
at Colgate University.
